Portland Stock Buyers Head to Kennewick for Auction

General manager of the Union Stock Yards to attend first annual thoroughbred hog sale at the O-W. R. & N. depot.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

R. E. Pratt, of the Meadowbrook Farm, has been advised that General Manager Doughtry and Buyer C. M. McAlister, of the Union Stock Yards at North Portland, will be here next Thursday to attend his first annual sale of thoroughbred Duroc Jersey hogs. With indications for fair weather, Mr. Pratt predicts that in point of attendance the sale will be one of the largest ever pulled off in this section of the country. He is receiving many inquiries daily for catalogs descriptive of the stock which is to be offered for sale, and there will probably be some keen bidding notwithstanding the unsettled conditions of the hog market and the continued skyward flight of grain prices. The sale will start promptly at 10:30 a. m. in improvised pens near the O-W. R. & N. depot.

Kennewick's agricultural roots remain strong, though the livestock auctions that once defined local commerce near the rail yards have largely given way to modern irrigation-fed crops. The reliance on O-W. R. & N. (Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company) logistics highlights the town's early status as a transit hub for regional livestock.
