Kennewick’s Diamond Fever
Local fans gear up for the season opener against Richland as the Kennewick Athletic Club pivots from gym work to baseball.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
At a meeting of the Kennewick Athletic Club, it was decided not to engage quarters for gymnasium work until next fall, but to devote the summer months to putting a cracking good baseball team on the map. Guy J. Haydon was elected manager for the year, and he is now busy with a schedule for the season. The season will be officially opened on the local grounds next Sunday at 3 o’clock, when Kennewick will cross bats with Richland. Local fans are of the opinion that the town has the material for the best team in years. Frank Morain, Kennewick’s Southpaw Kid, is looked upon as the coming pitcher of the territory. He will have a good working mate in N. Nichols, a star catcher who recently moved to Kennewick from the Okanogan country. The club has already rebuilt the grandstand and expects to make other improvements on the grounds for the accommodation alike of players and spectators.
“Kennewick’s Southpaw Kid, is looked upon as the coming pitcher of the territory.”
Local baseball rivalries between Kennewick and Richland are a century-old tradition. While the 'Southpaw Kid' and the grandstand are long gone, the competitive spirit between these Tri-Cities neighbors continues to define regional identity.
