After a terrific neck-and-neck race last night between Tacoma High School and Ellensburg Normal on the local basketball floor, Cook finally put the ball in the basket in the last minute of play and saved the day for Tacoma, winning the game 35 to 34. The team work of the visitors was marvelous and their big center always put Tacoma on the defensive in the start-off.
“Cook finally put the ball in the basket in the last minute of play and saved the day for Tacoma.”
High school basketball remains a cultural cornerstone in Tacoma, though the scores are significantly higher today than this 1909 defensive battle. Ellensburg Normal, now Central Washington University, maintains a long-standing rivalry with regional teams, continuing a tradition of competitive school sports that has defined Washington communities for over a century.
