The YMCA Takes the Tacoma Basketball Crown

A scrappy season ends with a decisive win against the high school, solidifying the city championship for the Y's quintette.

With a total of six games won and one game lost, the Tacoma Y.M.C.A. basketball quintette won the city championship last night, tearing off its final game with the 5 crack high school five with a score of 31 to 23. There will be one more game before the final close of the contest, but the last match is to be pulled off between Whitworth, the cellar champions, and the Y.M.C.A., which is not counted on as of much moment. If by some freak chance the Whitworth team should win against the Y.M.C.A. team, the percentage of the Y's and the high school team would be equal, .750, and a deciding game would have to be pulled off.

Amateur basketball clubs were the backbone of Tacoma’s early 20th-century social life. Today, while the professional sports infrastructure has evolved, the YMCA remains a vital community hub, carrying forward that same tradition of local neighborhood competition.
