Burton High School's Championship Dreams Take Flight
After two years absent from the league, Burton's high school teams roar back with a pair of victories over Auburn.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Now is the time for rejoicing. Burton Basket Ball fans stand a good chance of seeing their dreams of a 'Championship for Burton' materialize. For different reasons Burton has been out of the League for past two years. This year, thru the efforts of their principal, Mr. Prichard, and coach, Mr. Vye, they secured a place in the League. Last Friday night the two teams more than repaid these two for their efforts by winning both games from Auburn. The Burton high school girls' team won from Auburn by a score of 13-10. The boys, not to be outdone by the girls, but probably inspired a little by their victory, next proceeded to take their game from Auburn, also. After a hard-fought 40 minutes, in which there were many thrills, Burton was declared winner by the score of 29-19.
“The fighting spirit which the Burton girls showed against Auburn was more than a match for the over-confidence which they exhibited.”
The pride surrounding high school athletics remains a bedrock of community identity on Vashon Island. The 'Never say die' spirit described here echoes the same competitive local pride seen in island sports programs today, despite the consolidation of schools over the last century.
