Flood Washes Out Two Bridges and Leaves County Roads Cut

The Porter Creek and Garrard Creek bridges were lost in the recent flood; repairs are estimated at $800, with Wynooche road also damaged.

Two bridges were washed away by the recent flood—the one across Porter Creek and the one across Garrard Creek. Both were old structures, although the one over Porter Creek was replanked last summer. It is thought it will cost about $800 to replace them. A portion of the Wynooche road was also damaged by the caving in of an embankment. The cost of repairing it is estimated at $150.

Flood-damaged bridges and washed-out rural roads are still a familiar winter emergency in Grays Harbor County, where repair costs fall on small public budgets. The 1892 estimates—$800 and $150—sound quaint, but the same question remains: how much can a county afford to keep isolated communities connected?
