Cattle Dog Saves Teen from Cougar Attack Near Spokane

An 18-year-old hunting cattle narrowly escapes a mountain lion's spring, thanks to his loyal dog's fierce counterattack.

Spokane — Louis Johnson, 18 years old, had an exciting experience with a mountain lion Sunday afternoon. Young Johnson was hunting cattle and while passing under a tree saw a large shadow coming toward him. Dodging instinctively he miraculously escaped the full force of a large cougar which had sprung from the tree upon him. A large cattle dog fiercely attacked the lion after its spring upon his master. A fierce fight ensued before the animal escaped.

“Dodging instinctively he miraculously escaped the full force of a large cougar which had sprung from the tree upon him.”

This thrilling encounter from 1909 reminds us of the enduring bond between humans and working dogs, and the wildness that still lurks at the edges of our cities. Today, as Spokane grows, wildlife encounters like this are rare but still capture our imagination.
